Namibia's Green Milestone: Hylron Oshivela Project Pioneers Green Industrial Product with Hydrogen
Key Ideas
- President Mbumba's visit to the Hylron Oshivela Project highlights Namibia's commitment to sustainable industrial development.
- Hylron Oshivela will be the first project in the world to use green hydrogen in processing iron ore, a significant step towards sustainable steel production.
- The project has already created job opportunities for over 400 Namibians and engaged numerous local businesses, promoting economic growth in the region.
- Securing a significant offtake agreement for 200,000 tons of direct reduced iron demonstrates the project's potential for global impact and economic contribution.
President Nangolo Mbumba, accompanied by key officials, visited the Hylron Oshivela Project in Namibia's Erongo region. This project, part of Namibia's Green Hydrogen Programme, aims to produce the country's first green industrial product, iron ore, using green hydrogen. Hylron Oshivela, located in Arandis, is on track for completion and will be the world's pioneer in utilizing green hydrogen for processing iron oxide to create direct reduced iron (DRI) for sustainable steel manufacturing. The facility has already installed 44,000 solar panels, generating 25 MW of renewable energy. Through local engagement, the project has provided employment to over 400 Namibians and collaborated with 60 small and medium enterprises. With an offtake agreement in place to supply 200,000 tons of DRI, the project signifies Namibia's dedication to utilizing renewable resources for economic growth and industrial advancement.
