NTPC Flag-off Green Hydrogen Buses at World's Highest Altitude Project in Leh
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister flagged-off NTPC's green hydrogen buses in Leh, highlighting the company's contribution to energy security and decarbonisation efforts in India.
  • The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at Leh includes a solar plant, hydrogen filling station, and 5 intra-city buses, operating at the world's highest altitude, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and increasing oxygen levels.
  • The project showcases the potential of green hydrogen mobility in Ladakh due to high solar irradiance and low temperature, promoting self-sufficiency in energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuel logistics.
  • NTPC plans to expand hydrogen mobility projects and green hydrogen technologies across India, emphasizing the rapid scaling up of renewable energy capacity and establishing a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, inaugurated NTPC's green hydrogen buses in Leh, marking a significant step towards energy sustainability and decarbonisation. The project includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, a green hydrogen filling station with a capacity of 80 kg/day, and 5 hydrogen-powered intra-city buses. These buses can cover 300 km per fill of 25 kg of hydrogen, operating at an altitude of 3650m MSL, showcasing their adaptability to low-density air and sub-zero temperatures. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 MT/year and increase oxygen levels by 230 MT/year, equivalent to planting 13,000 trees annually. With Ladakh's ideal conditions of high solar irradiance and low temperature, the project highlights the potential for green hydrogen mobility solutions to enhance energy self-sufficiency and eliminate fossil fuel logistics. NTPC's commitment extends beyond Leh, with plans to implement more hydrogen mobility projects nationwide and enhance renewable energy capacity, including establishing a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
