NTPC's Green Hydrogen Initiative in Odisha Boosts Sustainable Mobility
Key Ideas
  • NTPC collaborates with GRIDCO and CRUT to establish green hydrogen infrastructure in Odisha, focusing on sustainable mobility.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding aims to introduce green energy technologies, including green hydrogen mobility schemes in the region.
  • Implementation includes setting up a green hydrogen fuelling station in Bhubaneswar and deploying hydrogen buses for both short-haul and long-haul operations.
  • The project aligns with the goal of transitioning from fossil fuel buses to clean and green fuels to enhance decarbonisation and energy security.
NTPC Limited, a state-run power company in India, has initiated a significant collaboration with GRIDCO and CRUT to establish green hydrogen infrastructure in Odisha. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between NTPC, GRIDCO (a Government of Odisha undertaking for Energy), and CRUT (Capital Region Urban Transport) aims to promote green energy technologies, particularly focusing on green hydrogen mobility schemes in the state. This partnership includes the setup of a green hydrogen fuelling station in Bhubaneswar, along with the introduction of hydrogen buses for both short-haul and long-haul operations. By phasing out fossil fuel buses in favor of clean and green fuels, the project contributes to decarbonisation efforts and enhances energy security in the region. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has also provided partial support for this project in Bhubaneswar. NTPC has already been active in the green hydrogen sector, with ongoing projects like the green hydrogen blending initiative in Surat and similar mobility projects in Leh, Greater Noida, and Kandla, Gujarat. Additionally, NTPC is working on developing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam and aims to achieve a renewable energy capacity of 60 GW by 2032.
