NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh: Transforming Energy Landscape
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister flags off NTPC's green hydrogen buses in Leh, applauds their contribution to energy security and decarbonisation.
  • The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at Leh includes a solar plant, hydrogen filling station, and 5 intra-city buses, operating at high altitude and low temperatures.
  • Project aims to reduce carbon emissions, increase oxygen levels, and promote self-sufficiency in energy production in Ladakh through green hydrogen solutions.
  • NTPC plans to expand green hydrogen projects in India, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy and hydrogen technologies for a sustainable future.
Union Minister of Power and Housing Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, inaugurated NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, India. The project includes a fleet of green hydrogen buses, a 1.7 MW solar plant, and a hydrogen filling station with 80 kg/day capacity. These initiatives aim to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 MT/year, and contribute 230 MT/year of pure oxygen to the atmosphere. The project, located at an altitude of 3650 m, showcases the innovative use of hydrogen technologies in challenging environments. NTPC's focus on green hydrogen solutions aligns with the goal of decarbonisation and promoting renewable energy sources. The Ladakh region's high solar irradiance and low temperatures create an ideal setting for efficient solar power and green hydrogen production, enabling self-sufficiency in energy generation. NTPC's plans to expand similar projects across India, along with the development of a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, underscore the commitment to scaling up renewable energy capacity and fostering sustainable energy practices.
