In a move towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation system, the Odisha government has taken a significant step by introducing green hydrogen buses in the state. Through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between GridCo, NTPC, and CRUT, the government plans to operate buses powered by green hydrogen produced from sewage waters. The project aims to combat pollution and reduce carbon emissions. The first phase will see three green hydrogen buses operational by August 15, 2025, with subsequent plans for expansion to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri.
NTPC will be responsible for manufacturing the green hydrogen buses, with a designated manufacturing and filling site in Gadakana near Bhubaneswar. These buses are capable of running up to 600 km on a single filling, utilizing green hydrogen known for its eco-friendly properties. By producing 260 kg of green hydrogen daily, the initiative also results in the release of 2080 kg of oxygen into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to the environment.
The partnership between the government officials and organizations like NTPC signifies a commitment to sustainable technology and energy solutions. The project not only promotes clean and renewable transportation but also highlights the potential for utilizing innovative methods to address environmental challenges. This initiative showcases a proactive approach towards building a greener future for public transportation in Odisha.
