OMV Aktiengesellschaft's majority-owned OMV Petrom SA has decided to construct a new plant at its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewables-based diesel. The €560 million project is expected to yield 250,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of SAF and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) by processing a combination of biofeedstocks, bio-naphtha, and bio-LPG. This plant, set to commence operations in 2028, will play a crucial role in meeting the rising regional demand for low-carbon products and reducing Romania's dependence on renewable-fuel imports. By integrating green hydrogen into production, OMV Petrom anticipates a 70% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional fuels. The company's broader decarbonization strategy involves investing €11 billion by 2030 to transition towards a lower-carbon future. This initiative aligns with OMV Petrom's commitment to achieving net-zero operations by 2050. The acquisition of a 50% stake in Respiră Verde SRL ensures a secure supply of renewable feedstocks for the SAF-HVO plant, which represents a significant step in the company's sustainable transformation efforts.
