OXCCU Launches One-Step Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plant at Oxford Airport
Key Ideas
- OXCCU opens a demonstration plant at Oxford Airport to produce sustainable aviation fuel using a novel one-step catalyst technology, aiming to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
- The company plans to scale up its production with a larger facility at Saltend Chemicals Park by 2026, capable of producing 160kg of liquid fuel per day.
- OXCCU's innovative process directly converts CO2 and hydrogen into jet fuel range hydrocarbons, eliminating the need for a two-step approach and reducing operating costs.
- The company has received significant backing from investors, including Clean Energy Ventures and United Airlines, and aims to secure further funding to expand its operations globally.
OXCCU, a spin-out from Oxford University, has inaugurated a demonstration Power-to-Liquid sustainable aviation fuel production plant at Oxford Airport, UK. The facility, named OX1, is set to start operations in September with the capability to produce approximately 1.2kg of liquid fuel per day. This plant is designed to showcase the direct conversion of CO2 and hydrogen into jet fuel range hydrocarbons in a single step using a novel catalyst developed by the company.
The OXCCU plant represents a significant advancement in the PtL process, as most existing methods require a two-step approach that incurs high energy input and cost. By bypassing the conversion of CO2 to CO, OXCCU aims to overcome these barriers and streamline the production of sustainable aviation fuel. The success of OX1 will pave the way for a larger facility, OX2, scheduled for operation in 2026 at Saltend Chemicals Park in England, which will have the capacity to produce 160kg of liquid fuel per day.
The company's catalytic technology, OX•EFUEL, was initially developed at the University of Oxford, leading to a breakthrough publication in Nature in 2020. With a team predominantly composed of Oxford University alumni, OXCCU boasts a wealth of expertise in catalyst technology and sustainable fuel production.
Key to their process is a patented iron catalyst that enables the direct conversion of CO2 and H2 into jet fuel range hydrocarbons, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. The company emphasizes the environmental benefits of its one-step process, highlighting a lower carbon footprint and simplified reactor design.
While acknowledging the challenges of e-fuel production costs, OXCCU remains optimistic about the scalability and potential impact of their technology. Supported by investments from various entities and government grants, the company envisions a future where their catalyst plays a central role in advancing sustainable aviation fuel globally.
With plans to raise additional funds for future projects and technology licensing, OXCCU aims to solidify its position as a catalyst provider and facilitate the widespread adoption of their innovative fuel production process.
