The BOxHy project, a collaboration between Flexens, Lhyfe, and Stockholm University, has received the United Nations Ocean Decade endorsement, marking a significant milestone in the fight for the reoxygenation of the oceans. This project aims to address anoxia in the Baltic Sea by injecting oxygen into the sea through offshore hydrogen production using water electrolysis. Anoxia, characterized by a complete lack of oxygen, threatens marine life and ecosystem health. The project also explores sector coupling with green hydrogen production to offer a sustainable model for environmental restoration and economic development. The endorsement under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 signifies global recognition of BOxHy's efforts to combat anoxia and support ocean health. By aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 Ocean Action, the project contributes to reversing the decline in ocean health and promoting sustainable ocean management. The endorsement opens doors for global collaboration and innovation in addressing the urgent need to reoxygenate the oceans. The project coordinators, Consortium members, and stakeholders express their commitment to advancing ocean health and sustainability through the innovative research and collaboration facilitated by the UN Ocean Decade endorsement. By engaging with the Ocean Decade Network and other partners, BOxHy aims to mitigate anoxia on a Baltic-sea-wide scale by involving various stakeholders, including the scientific community, energy sector, policymakers, citizens, and investors. The project's future outlook includes implementing the Baltic Sea Pilot for Pure Oxygen Injection (BOxIn) to further its goal of reoxygenating marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices in the energy and environmental sectors.
