The National Green Hydrogen Mission is making significant strides in the steel sector by setting up pilot projects to explore the potential of green hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels. With a budgetary outlay of Rs. 455 crore until FY 2029-30, the mission aims to revolutionize steel manufacturing processes. MECON Limited has invited proposals for utilizing hydrogen in DRI Pilot Plant and existing Blast Furnace as part of the government's initiative to promote green initiatives. The Steel Ministry is encouraging public sector undertakings, private sector companies, R&D institutions, and equipment manufacturing companies to participate in this transformation. The mission aims to advance technologies and expertise in utilizing hydrogen in the steel-making process, with a vision to make green-hydrogen based steel production cost-competitive in the near future, leveraging renewable energy sources and cutting-edge electrolysis technologies. The schemes under the mission focus on developing pilot projects, utilizing hydrogen in Blast Furnace, and injecting hydrogen in DRI making units to gradually increase its proportion, thus reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative highlights the government's commitment to promoting sustainable practices in the steel industry and fostering technological innovation in alignment with green energy goals.
