ScottishPower Plans UK's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant Near Glasgow
Key Ideas
  • ScottishPower, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, submits a planning application for a 20 MW green hydrogen plant near Glasgow, UK.
  • The facility, powered by solar and battery units, aims to produce 8 tonnes of hydrogen per day for commercial use by 2023.
  • The project aligns with Glasgow's goal to achieve a zero emissions vehicle fleet by 2029 and supports the UK's target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • The initiative is part of efforts to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries and is crucial for the transition to cleaner energy sources.
ScottishPower, a subsidiary of the Spanish utility Iberdrola, has proposed the development of a 20 MW green hydrogen plant near Glasgow, marking the UK's largest such unit. The plant will utilize a combination of solar and battery technology to generate hydrogen, with a capacity to produce 8 tonnes of hydrogen daily. This output is significant, equivalent to fueling more than 550 buses on a round trip between Glasgow and Edinburgh each day. The location of the plant, near the Whitelee onshore wind farm, also includes plans for a solar and battery energy storage system with capacities of up to 40 MW and 50 MW respectively. Green hydrogen, produced by using renewable electricity to split water molecules, is seen as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in industries that are challenging to decarbonize. ScottishPower hopes for a decision on the planning application by autumn 2021, aiming to supply hydrogen to the commercial market before 2023. The project aligns with Glasgow's ambition to transition to a zero emissions vehicle fleet by 2029, encouraging the use of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. This initiative is a step towards the UK's target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and supports the upcoming COP 26 climate talks, to be held in Glasgow. The project not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also enhances the local infrastructure and promotes sustainable urban planning.
