Spanish-Algerian Partnership for Green Hydrogen Supply to Europe
Key Ideas
  • Spanish Cepsa and Algerian Sonatrach signed a MoU to develop a green hydrogen project aimed at supplying the European market.
  • The project will include an electrolysis hydrogen production plant, solar and wind energy supply, and facilities for methanol and green ammonia production.
  • Another MoU was signed with international partners to explore large-scale hydrogen production and export to Italy, Germany, and Austria via the SoutH2 Corridor.
  • The partners aim to assess the technical and economic feasibility of the entire green hydrogen value chain for the project.
Spanish company Cepsa and Algerian firm Sonatrach have collaborated by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to assess the feasibility of a green hydrogen project in Algeria. The first phase of the project will involve conducting studies to determine its viability, while the second phase will focus on project development. The integrated project will comprise an electrolysis hydrogen production plant, renewable energy sources like solar and wind power for the electrolyzers, and facilities for methanol and green ammonia production, storage, transportation, and other necessary infrastructure. Additionally, Sonatrach and Sonelgaz have entered into another MoU with international companies from Germany, Austria, and Italy to investigate a large-scale hydrogen production project in Algeria. The aim is to export hydrogen through the SoutH2 Corridor to European countries. This corridor is envisioned as a hydrogen-ready pipeline linking North Africa to central Europe. The partners are committed to examining the technical and economic feasibility of the entire green hydrogen value chain to ensure successful project implementation and operation.
