Tunisia and Acwa Power Collaborate on Massive Green Hydrogen Project
Key Ideas
  • Tunisia and Acwa Power sign a memorandum to develop a large-scale green hydrogen production project with a total capacity of 12 gigawatts.
  • The project involves advanced infrastructure for renewable energy, including photovoltaic solar and wind energy, electrolysis technology, and green hydrogen storage.
  • Tunisia aims to reduce its dependence on gas by implementing a national strategy for green hydrogen, with plans to produce 8.3 million tonnes by 2050 and potentially export up to 6 million tonnes annually.
Tunisia has partnered with Saudi energy company Acwa Power to embark on an ambitious green hydrogen production project. The agreement outlines the development of an advanced infrastructure capable of producing integrated green hydrogen with a massive total capacity of approximately 12 gigawatts of renewable energy. The project's first phase includes the production of 4.1 gigawatts of electricity from sources like photovoltaic solar and wind energy, along with initiatives for energy storage, high-voltage transmission lines, water desalination, and green hydrogen storage units. The goal is to ensure regular electricity supply and pave the way for the production of 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. The investment for this initial phase is estimated at around 6.2 billion euros. Subsequent phases are set to expand renewable energy capacity and increase green hydrogen production rates significantly. Tunisia's commitment to the energy transition is evident in its drive to reduce reliance on gas and embrace green hydrogen as a transformative force. By setting ambitious targets to produce 8.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2050, Tunisia aims to reshape its industrial and energy landscape, offering both local and global economic benefits. The country's potential to export up to 6 million tonnes of hydrogen annually could position it as a key player in the clean energy market, with far-reaching implications on the international stage.
