GeoPura solutions and the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) recently completed a groundbreaking hydrogen power trial aimed at electricity generation for recharging vehicles. The trial, the first of its kind in a military application, focused on implementing an alternative Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) charging capability using zero-emission green hydrogen-powered units (HPUs) at five key MOD locations in the UK. Air Vice-Marshal Rich Pratley highlighted the trial's significance in showcasing hydrogen as a crucial enabler for transitioning to zero-emissions energy and overcoming challenges associated with the expanding electric vehicle fleet. The GeoPura HPUs, with power outputs ranging from 250kW to 1MW, provided a reliable and constant power source to support the scaling of rapid electric vehicle fleet charging infrastructure. The hydrogen-powered units offered a mix of AC and fast DC charging capabilities, catering to different charging speeds based on operational requirements. With approximately 120,000 miles driven in vehicles charged via the HPUs during the trial, hydrogen emerged as a reliable and sustainable alternative to meet the increasing electricity demand within the forces. GeoPura emphasized the benefits of using green hydrogen for rapid charging with zero harmful emissions, free from grid limitations, enabling widespread adoption of electric vehicles and contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for Defence operations. Looking ahead, GeoPura aims to expand the use of hydrogen technology across Defence sites by understanding demand signals, formulating regulations for military hydrogen use, and enhancing personnel training in handling hydrogen-based systems. The company plans to utilize insights gained from the trial to drive ongoing research and development efforts, including the development of smaller, more mobile hydrogen systems for shorter deployments and larger, more power-dense systems to cater to diverse operational needs both domestically and internationally.
