UKEn and Portland Port Collaborate for Green Hydrogen Energy Hub in South Dorset
Key Ideas
  • UK Energy Storage and Portland Port signed Memorandums of Understanding for two hydrogen projects in South Dorset.
  • The collaboration aims to establish a green hydrogen energy hub with onshore storage, hydrogen production, and connection to the wider UK.
  • The partnership could enhance national significance and secure revenue support for UKEn in government's Hydrogen Storage procurement process.
  • Portland Port aspires to become a leading renewable energy hub on the south coast through these green energy initiatives.
UK Energy Storage (UKEn) has formed a partnership with Portland Port to explore two joint venture hydrogen projects in South Dorset. The first project involves importing green hydrogen carrier liquids by ship into Portland Port to generate green hydrogen, while the second project focuses on producing green hydrogen via electrolysis within the port. This collaboration leverages UKEn's South Dorset storage site and Portland Port's deep-water port capabilities to create a significant green hydrogen energy hub. The initiative aims to establish one of the three national scale hydrogen hubs in the UK, integrating onshore underground storage, green hydrogen production, and connection via trunk pipeline. Stephen Sanderson, the CEO of UKEn's parent company, highlighted the potential of this partnership to enhance national significance and secure revenue support in the upcoming government's Hydrogen Storage procurement process. Additionally, the prospect of UKEn's proposed Hydrogen Battery combined with offshore Dorset wind power further strengthens the revenue support case. Ian McQuade, the commercial general manager at Portland Port, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and outlined the port's vision to become a leading renewable energy hub on the south coast. This joint initiative signifies a positive step towards establishing sustainable energy solutions and promoting green energy practices in the UK.
