Union Government Sanctions Pilot Projects for Green Hydrogen in Steel Production
Key Ideas
- Three pilot projects sanctioned by the Union Government for utilizing green hydrogen in steel production.
- Objectives include demonstrating safe operations, technical feasibility, and economic viability of green hydrogen-based steelmaking processes.
- Financial support of Rs. 347 Crore provided for the projects, aiming to pave the way for scaling up such technologies in India.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission expected to contribute to India's self-reliance through clean energy and lead to significant decarbonization of the economy.
The Union Government in India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission aimed at utilizing hydrogen in steel production. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued guidelines for implementing pilot projects in the steel sector. The objectives of these projects include identifying advanced technologies for using green hydrogen in steelmaking, demonstrating safe operations, validating technical feasibility and performance, and evaluating economic viability for low-carbon iron and steel production. The approved projects include producing DRI using 100% hydrogen, reducing coal/coke consumption in blast furnaces, and injecting hydrogen in DRI making units.
The sanctioned projects involve companies like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd, with capacities ranging from 40 to 3200 tons per day. The Government of India has allocated a total financial support of Rs. 347 Crore for these projects, expected to be operational within the next three years. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched with significant funding, aims to drive India towards self-reliance in clean energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, and position the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology and market transition.
