Advancement of Six Renewable Hydrogen Projects in Europe Boosted by Grant Agreements
Key Ideas
  • Six renewable hydrogen projects in Europe, with a total capacity of 1,442 MW, have progressed with signed grant agreements.
  • The projects, located in Spain, Portugal, Finland, and Norway, aim to produce 1.52 Mt of renewable hydrogen in their first ten years of operation, offsetting over 10 MtCO2 emissions.
  • These projects were selected for EU financial support through the Innovation Fund's pilot hydrogen auction, receiving a total of €694.5m over ten years, with individual grants ranging from €8m to €245m.
  • This development signals a significant step towards promoting renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions in Europe through the production of green hydrogen.
The advancement of six renewable hydrogen projects in Europe has taken a significant step forward with the signing of grant agreements by their developers. These projects, totaling 1,442 MW in capacity, are spread across four European countries: Spain, Portugal, Finland, and Norway. Among the highlighted projects are eNRG Lahti in Finland (90 MW), Grey2Green-II in Portugal (200 MW), HYSENCIA in Spain (35 MW), SKIGA in Norway (117 MW), Catalina in Spain (500 MW), and MP2X in Portugal (500 MW). Collectively, these projects have the potential to generate up to 1.52 Mt of renewable hydrogen in their initial decade of operation, thereby helping to offset more than 10 MtCO2 emissions. The projects secured EU financial backing through the Innovation Fund's pilot hydrogen auction, where they were among the seven selected projects. The total support amounts to €694.5m, which will be distributed over a ten-year period to aid in the development and operation of these renewable hydrogen initiatives. Grants for individual projects vary, with the HYSENCIA project receiving €8m and the MP2X project being granted €245m. This significant support and progress in the renewable hydrogen sector exemplify a positive step towards achieving sustainable energy production and curbing greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. The projects not only aim to drive renewable hydrogen production but also contribute to the region's broader environmental goals by reducing carbon footprints and promoting cleaner energy sources.
