AFC Energy Unveils Portable Hydrogen Solution 'Hy-5' for Clean Energy Production
Key Ideas
  • AFC Energy introduces Hy-5, a portable hydrogen solution offering up to 500kg of hydrogen per day by 2026.
  • The system operates on a 'plug-and-play' basis, utilizing ammonia to produce hydrogen at a market-disruptive price of £10 per kilogram.
  • Hy-5's high purity hydrogen output and versatility make it suitable for various industries, ranging from transportation to heavy manufacturing.
  • By eliminating the need for extensive infrastructure and leveraging ammonia as a feedstock, AFC Energy aims to address key challenges in scaling hydrogen production.
AFC Energy has launched 'Hy-5,' a new hydrogen power solution tailored for businesses seeking a flexible and cost-effective way to generate clean energy. This portable system, part of AFC's Hyamtec brand, is set to provide up to 500kg of hydrogen per day from 2026. Hy-5 is designed for easy deployment, functioning as a 'plug-and-play' system and operating under a 'fuel as a service' model at £10 per kilogram. By converting ammonia into over 99.9% pure hydrogen, Hy-5 aligns with AFC Energy's fuel cell generators for diverse applications. The innovation targets the challenge of efficient hydrogen production and distribution, bypassing traditional infrastructure needs by utilizing ammonia as a readily available feedstock. AFC foresees widespread adoption of Hy-5, envisioning its use in hydrogen fuel stations, construction sites, off-grid electricity provision, and various industrial sectors like steelmaking and chemicals. CEO John Wilson highlighted the significance of Hy-5 in overcoming infrastructure limitations and high production costs, presenting a market-disruptive solution for on-site hydrogen supply at a competitive price point.
