Key Ideas
  • Airbus UpNext, a subsidiary of Airbus, introduces Cryoprop demonstrator to enhance superconducting technologies for future hydrogen aircraft propulsion.
  • The demonstrator integrates a two megawatt-class superconducting electric propulsion system cooled by liquid hydrogen for weight and fuel saving potential.
  • Cryoprop aims to confirm the viability of superconducting technologies, assess safety aspects, and foster expertise for future aircraft applications.
Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has unveiled a new technological demonstrator named Cryoprop. The goal of this initiative is to accelerate the development of superconducting technologies for electric propulsion systems on hydrogen-powered aircraft of the future. The Cryoprop demonstrator, developed by Airbus teams in Toulouse, France, and Ottobrunn, Germany, will feature a two megawatt-class superconducting electric propulsion system cooled by liquid hydrogen through a helium recirculation loop. Michael Augello, CEO of Airbus UpNext, expressed confidence in the demonstrator's ability to enhance the propulsion system's performance, leading to substantial weight and fuel savings. Airbus has been actively involved in advancing superconducting technologies for high-power electric propulsion, with previous milestones including the successful power-on of a 500 kW cryogenic propulsion system. Cryoprop's objectives extend beyond technological advancement; the project will also focus on safety considerations, industrialization processes, and operational aspects related to superconducting technologies. Additionally, Airbus aims to build internal expertise and cultivate a supportive ecosystem to accelerate the implementation of innovative products like superconducting cables, motors, and cryogenic power electronics. This strategic move by Airbus underscores a significant step towards harnessing superconducting technologies for the aviation industry, particularly in the context of hydrogen-powered aircraft. By investing in Cryoprop, Airbus is positioning itself at the forefront of cutting-edge innovations that could revolutionize the future of aviation.
