Baltic Sea Region TSOs Sign MoU to Boost Hydrogen Market Development
Key Ideas
- Nine gas TSOs around the Baltic Sea signed an MoU to coordinate hydrogen economy development, focusing on infrastructure projects and market information sharing.
- The Baltic Sea region aims to significantly expand offshore wind capacity and renewable energy projects to reduce dependency on Russian fossil fuels and meet EU climate targets.
- The MoU aligns with the Marienborg Declaration and the EU agenda, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in advancing clean energy and enhancing energy security.
- Several cross-border hydrogen infrastructure projects are underway to support the REPowerEU plan and the European Hydrogen Backbone vision in the Baltic Sea region.
Nine gas transmission system operators (TSOs) around the Baltic Sea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing the hydrogen market in the region. The MoU aims to facilitate coordination among TSOs for infrastructure projects related to hydrogen transmission and storage. Additionally, the group plans to exchange information on hydrogen market developments, renewable hydrogen production, and demand. Signatories of the MoU include TSOs from countries like Poland, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Sweden, Germany, and Latvia. The Baltic Sea region, with its significant renewable potential, is poised to become a key player in clean hydrogen production, potentially supplying up to 45% of the clean hydrogen outlined in the REPowerEU plan by 2030. The signing of the MoU is in line with the Marienborg Declaration, which focuses on expanding offshore wind capacity and collaborating on renewable energy projects in the region. By reducing Europe's reliance on imported Russian fossil fuels, accelerating progress towards European climate goals, and enhancing energy system resilience, the MoU complements the EU agenda for a sustainable energy transition. Various cross-border infrastructure projects, such as the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor and the Nordic Hydrogen Route, are being developed to support the region's clean energy objectives and align with the European Hydrogen Backbone vision.
