China recently launched its first hydrogen-powered container ship, Dong Fang Qing Gang, in the Zhejiang Province, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry's shift towards sustainable practices. The vessel, with a length of 211 feet and a carrying capacity of 64 containers or approximately 1,450 tons, is equipped with two hydrogen fuel cells, each with a power rating of 240 kW, developed by the Chinese company Sinosynergy. This cutting-edge technology aims to showcase the viability of fossil-fuel-free transport and address the growing concerns of carbon emissions in the transportation sector. The hydrogen-powered ship also features a substantial onboard hydrogen storage capacity of 1,200 pounds, enabling it to cover a range of 236 miles and potentially prevent up to 700 tons of carbon emissions annually. Additionally, the vessel incorporates a lithium battery to store excess energy generated by the fuel cell, with a sophisticated control system that optimizes propulsion. Scheduled to become operational on the inland route between Jiaxing and Xiasha port in Hangzhou by 2025, the Dong Fang Qing Gang project aligns with China's ambitious goals to promote green hydrogen utilization in transportation. By leveraging water-based transport, which offers lower emissions compared to air freight and road-based transport, China aims to establish an eco-friendly inland water transport route powered by green hydrogen. With the global transportation sector facing increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, the emergence of hydrogen-powered shipping represents a promising solution for long-haul transport by water. By demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of this innovative technology, projects like Dong Fang Qing Gang pave the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious maritime industry.
