China has launched its pioneering offshore hydrogen-ammonia-methanol project in Yantai, Shandong, signaling a significant advancement in clean fuel production for the marine industry. The collaborative effort between CHN Energy Hydrogen Energy Technology, CIMC Raffles, and Guoneng Hydrogen Innovation Technology offers a holistic demonstration of offshore hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. The project, featuring a state-of-the-art semi-submersible platform standing over 50 meters tall and weighing 20,000 tons, has successfully transitioned into its operational trial phase following construction completion in March. This platform integrates cutting-edge technologies such as photovoltaic power generation and electrolysis systems to ensure energy self-sufficiency. With three hydrogen production units, including seawater and freshwater electrolysis systems, the platform can produce five tons of freshwater daily for hydrogen generation. The produced hydrogen is further processed into methanol and ammonia to overcome storage and transportation challenges, ultimately serving as clean marine fuels and vital industrial raw materials. By harnessing offshore renewable energy for hydrogen production, the project not only promotes sustainability but also sets a precedent for future clean fuel initiatives. Having commenced construction in September 2024 and receiving design compliance approval from the China Classification Society in January 2025, this project plays a pivotal role in establishing technical standards and regulatory frameworks for China's evolving offshore hydrogen production sector, paving the way for a more sustainable and innovative energy landscape.
