Clyde Hydrogen's Milestone Achievement in Continuous Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • Clyde Hydrogen in Scotland has successfully produced hydrogen continuously for the first time using decoupled electrolysis technology.
  • The beta version of their system can produce high-pressure hydrogen over 100 bar, even without renewable power.
  • The startup has secured funding from various sources, including the Scottish Government's Hydrogen Innovation Scheme and plans to develop a commercial system by 2026.
  • A full pilot system is expected later this year, with a commercial demonstration system set for 2027, showcasing their electrolyzer technology in partnership with PlusZero.
Scottish startup Clyde Hydrogen has achieved a significant milestone by continuously producing hydrogen through their decoupled electrolysis system. The technology involves splitting water into two stages to produce high-pressure hydrogen, even when renewable power is unavailable. The beta version of the system successfully operated at over 100 bar of pressure, although still under manual control. Clyde Hydrogen is now gearing up for a full pilot system later this year and plans to have a commercial demonstration system by 2027. They have partnered with PlusZero to showcase their electrolyzer technology outside the laboratory. The startup has initiated a new funding round to attract £5 million in investment to develop a production-ready system by 2026. Backed by pre-seed funding from Zinc, the University of Glasgow, and grants from the Scottish Government and the Net Zero Technology Centre, Clyde Hydrogen is progressing towards their goal. James Peck, the CEO, expressed confidence in moving forward to build the full prototype for a commercial pilot project. This development signifies a positive step towards advancing hydrogen production technology and sustainable energy solutions.
