In Colombia, the transition to clean hydrogen is gaining traction as oil refiners and fertilizer producers emerge as crucial players in driving adoption. Karen Peralta, head of the Andi-Naturgas hydrogen chamber, emphasized the importance of making low-emission hydrogen competitive with current fossil-based options. The challenges primarily revolve around decarbonizing industries like transportation and incentivizing the switch to hydrogen by addressing the absence of a carbon tax. Peralta highlighted the need for technologies like fuel cell trucks to reach cost parity with diesel vehicles to enhance competitiveness. Despite hurdles, Colombia aims to have 1GW of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen by 2030 and currently has 49 hydrogen projects in various stages of development, with 13 undergoing pilot testing. Companies like Ecopetrol, EPM, Hevolución, and Sumitomo are actively contributing to these initiatives, underscoring the growing interest in clean energy projects in the country.
