Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready Power Plant to be Built in Ellesmere Port
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition plans to build EET Hydrogen Power, a hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at Stanlow refinery, aiming to complete construction by 2027.
  • The plant will have a capacity of 125MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, reducing 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.
  • EET's investment in the hydrogen power plant supports decarbonisation goals for the Stanlow refinery, aiming to cut total emissions by 95% by 2030.
  • The project is part of EET's $3 billion energy transition initiatives in the North West, contributing to the region's low carbon energy advancement and employment growth.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) is set to construct Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at its Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom. The EET Hydrogen Power project aims to be completed by 2027, supporting EET Fuels' ambition to be the lowest carbon process refinery globally and a leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. The plant, with a capacity of 125MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, will help reduce 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually by replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen. This initiative is pivotal in EET's plan to decrease total emissions at the Stanlow refinery by 95% by 2030. Furthermore, the investment into the hydrogen power plant is part of EET's $3 billion energy transition initiatives in the North West, marking a significant step towards decarbonisation and employment growth in the region. Tony Fountain, managing partner of Essar Energy Transition, emphasized the importance of EET Hydrogen Power in showcasing the pathway to decarbonising high-emission industries, while Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, highlighted the project's role in contributing to regional emissions reduction targets and establishing Stanlow as a low carbon transition hub within the HyNet Industrial Cluster.
