Fortescue, a prominent mining company, has launched the Green Metal Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, marking a significant step towards sustainable metal production. With an investment of AUD$75 million, the project aims to revolutionize the traditional metal production process by implementing green practices. By utilizing green hydrogen and an electric smelting furnace, the project targets an annual production of 1,500 tonnes of eco-friendly metal, starting in 2025. This green metal, produced with Fortescue's green hydrogen generated at the largest hydrogen facility in Australia, will be suitable for use in steel plants globally, contributing to environmental objectives. The project announcement, attended by Fortescue's top executives, highlights the company's dedication to transforming the iron and steel industry known for high greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Andrew Forrest AO emphasized the importance of rethinking the iron and steel value chain to establish a green industry in Australia. The integration of innovative technologies within the Green Metal Project includes Fortescue's green hydrogen plant and other advanced facilities at the Green Energy Hub. These facilities, such as the hydrogen liquefaction plant and zero-emission technology prototypes, showcase Fortescue's commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions in the mining sector. The company's effort extends beyond metal production to promoting renewable energy usage and zero-emission technologies. The Green Energy Hub also features a hydrogen refueling station for fuel cell electric vehicles and prototypes like the Offboard Power Unit and hydrogen-powered haul trucks. With the support from the WA Government's Renewable Hydrogen Fund, Fortescue's initiatives demonstrate a purposeful shift towards a greener and more sustainable industry landscape in Australia.
