Hans Group Holdings Partners with Mainland Producer to Supply Hydrogen for Hong Kong Citybus Fleet
Key Ideas
  • Hans Group Holdings secures a hydrogen supply agreement with Grand Resource Hydrogen Energy Science & Technology for Citybus fleet decarbonisation.
  • Five tonnes of hydrogen daily supply to meet the needs of around 100 hydrogen fuel cell buses, contributing to zero emissions by 2045.
  • Citybus aims to expand its hydrogen fleet, with plans for five hydrogen fuel cell buses this year and full fleet decarbonisation by 2045.
  • Despite economic viability concerns due to high hydrogen costs in Hong Kong, Hans Group's partnership aims to make hydrogen-powered buses feasible.
Hans Group Holdings, the majority owner of Hong Kong bus operator Citybus, has partnered with Grand Resource Hydrogen Energy Science & Technology, a mainland producer, to supply hydrogen for Citybus' fleet decarbonisation efforts. With a minimum daily supply of five tonnes of hydrogen guaranteed at mainland prices, Hans Group aims to address concerns about hydrogen supply source and affordability. The agreement, signed in Shenzhen, will support Citybus in transitioning to a low-carbon public transportation fuel. Citybus plans to expand its hydrogen fleet, with the current fleet of over 1,700 buses set to achieve zero emissions by 2045, surpassing Hong Kong's deadline. Despite the high cost of hydrogen in Hong Kong, this partnership signals a positive step towards making hydrogen buses economically viable in the region. The initial plan includes introducing five hydrogen fuel cell buses this year, paving the way for a sustainable and green public transportation system in Hong Kong.
