The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has issued 'HaritSagar', the Green Port Guidelines, with the aim of reducing carbon intensity and fostering an environment-friendly ecosystem at Major Ports. These guidelines come with proposed incentives to encourage sustainable practices. Ships using cleaner fuels or equipped with shore power reception facilities will receive priority berthing or rebates in berth dues. Private operators utilizing alternative fuels like Methanol, Ethanol, and even Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology will be incentivized. Furthermore, adopting green fuel or electric vehicles for their fleet may earn green certification and incentives for private port operators, stevedores, agents, exporters, and importers. Truck operators transitioning to green fuels or electric fleets will also be identified and rewarded. Major Ports like Visakhapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh have taken concrete steps to reduce pollution by adhering to environmental guidelines, utilizing solar power, implementing sewage treatment plants, controlling dust particles from cargo stacks, and employing mechanized sweeping machines. Regular awareness campaigns on environmental protection and conservation themes are integral to the port operations. The Ministry's emphasis on eco-friendly practices and incentives to promote sustainability signifies a positive step towards greener port operations and a more environmentally conscious maritime industry.
