Hong Kong Energy Leaders Urge Government Support for Hydrogen Development
Key Ideas
  • Senior executives in Hong Kong's energy sector advocate for streamlined approval processes, increased pilot projects, and financial backing to boost the city's hydrogen ecosystem.
  • Veolia Hong Kong and Hong Kong and China Gas collaborate on the city's first green hydrogen project, converting landfill gas into energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Companies in Hong Kong face challenges with lengthy approval times for hydrogen initiatives, hoping for quicker processes as hydrogen technology advances.
  • China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) embarks on a pilot project with partners to generate electricity from hydrogen, emphasizing the need for government support and faster approval timelines.
Senior executives in Hong Kong's energy supply chain are advocating for increased support from the government to expedite the development of the city's hydrogen ecosystem. These leaders suggest that streamlining approval procedures, allowing more pilot projects, and providing additional financial support would attract investments and aid in cost reduction. At the InnoTech Forum organized by InvestHK, industry figures emphasized the significance of establishing a code of practice and standards specific to hydrogen projects in Hong Kong to facilitate investments in the sector. Norman Cheng from Veolia Hong Kong highlighted the importance of a clear roadmap for hydrogen development to boost investor confidence. Veolia, in collaboration with Hong Kong and China Gas, is working on a groundbreaking green hydrogen project at the South East New Territories Landfill Extension to produce energy from landfill gas sustainably. However, companies face challenges related to lengthy approval processes for hydrogen initiatives, as noted by Shao Ruizhe from China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong). Ruizhe stressed the need for shorter approval times as hydrogen technology evolves. The company is engaged in a pilot project with partners to generate electricity from hydrogen at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park, underlining the importance of government backing and efficient approval procedures for advancing hydrogen projects in Hong Kong.
