Hydrocell and Genevos Partner to Power Venice's First Hydrogen Passenger Vessel
Key Ideas
  • Hydrocell selects Genevos to provide a 40kW marine-certified hydrogen fuel cell power system for the first hydrogen-powered passenger vessel in Venice.
  • Genevos will also conduct a hazard and operability study (HAZOP) to ensure safety in the design of the hydrogen-electric energy system.
  • Once retrofitted, the vessel Nobody's Perfect will operate in the Venice lagoon starting from the second quarter of 2025, offering silent and emission-free navigation.
  • Hydrocell has secured hydrogen supplies for the vessel through an agreement with NatPower H, ensuring the availability of green hydrogen for pleasure boating over three years.
Italy-based Hydrocell, specializing in hydrogen powertrains, has partnered with Genevos, a French company focusing on hydrogen and fuel cell power systems for maritime use. This collaboration aims to equip Venice's first hydrogen-powered passenger vessel, Nobody's Perfect, with a 40kW marine-certified hydrogen fuel cell power system. Genevos will oversee the retrofitting process from diesel to a clean hydrogen-electric energy system, ensuring safety through a hazard and operability study. Nobody's Perfect, a vintage wooden fishing boat, will begin operating in the Venice lagoon by mid-2025, heralding silent and emission-free navigation. Philippe Davignon from Genevos emphasizes the importance of quick and effective solutions in environmental transitions, especially in historical locations like Venice. Hydrocell's CEO, Karl Manfredi, expresses confidence in Genevos as the ideal partner for this pioneering project. Moreover, Hydrocell has secured a hydrogen supply agreement with NatPower H to provide approximately 4.5 tons of hydrogen over three years for the vessel's operation. This initiative signifies a significant step towards green mobility and showcases the potential of hydrogen technology in the maritime sector.
