Hyundai Motor Co. has revealed its latest innovation, the hydrogen-powered vehicle called 'Initium,' projected for release in the first half of 2023. The concept car boasts an impressive driving range of over 650 kilometers on a single refueling, exceeding the capabilities of its predecessor, the Nexo. Additionally, the Initium can be utilized as a backup power source for households by linking to their electricity supply, showcasing its versatility beyond traditional transportation. Hyundai's CEO Jaehoon Chang expressed the company's commitment to pushing for hydrogen-powered vehicles, despite acknowledging the current lack of profitability in this sector. Hyundai's strong focus on hydrogen is evident through its significant investment pledge of $4 billion over the next decade to build a future around hydrogen, aiming to achieve a net-zero target by 2045 and ensure carbon-neutral practices throughout production and operation. Although battery-powered electric vehicles have been more prominent in the industry, Hyundai sees the potential of hydrogen, particularly in heavy-duty commercial vehicles due to its advantages in storage density, weight, and range. The company's strategic approach aligns hydrogen technology with its long-term sustainability goals, emphasizing its belief in the viability of hydrogen as a clean and efficient alternative fuel source.
