PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna (BAg) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with fuel cell company PT HDF Energy Indonesia to research the application of hydrogen technology in decarbonizing Indonesia's shipping sector. The agreement, announced during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2025 in Jakarta, highlights BAg's commitment to supporting the country's energy transition initiative. Currently, BAg has already implemented onshore charging for ships at the Suralaya PLTU Port in Banten as part of its decarbonization strategies. The collaboration with HDF Energy Indonesia aims to further these efforts by exploring the use of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source for maritime transportation. HDF Energy Indonesia's President Director expressed strong support for the adoption of hydrogen technology in Indonesia's maritime sector, emphasizing the country's significant potential in this area. The partnership will involve a comprehensive study on retrofitting ships with hydrogen fuel cell technology and assessing the economic and technical viability of hydrogen as an alternative fuel for BAg's fleet. This move aligns with Indonesia's long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, a target supported by State utility company PT PLN. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key figures such as the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, the French Ambassador to Indonesia, and PLN's President Director, highlighting the significance of this collaboration in advancing clean energy transition in the maritime industry.
