Innovative Hydrogen-Hybrid Research Vessel Design Receives ABS Approval
Key Ideas
  • Glosten's hydrogen-hybrid research vessel design has been granted Approval in Principle by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
  • The Coastal-Class Research Vessel (CCRV) will be powered by fuel cells and will support marine ecosystem research along the California coast for Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
  • The project team, including partners like Siemens Energy, Ballard Power Systems, and Chart Industries, is progressing the design to the functional level and preparing for the vessel's construction.
  • The goal is to create a research vessel that meets scientific needs while minimizing environmental impact, showcasing the integration of modern technologies like liquid hydrogen fuel.
Glosten's innovative hydrogen-hybrid research vessel design for the US San Diego's Coastal-Class Research Vessel (CCRV) has been awarded Approval in Principle by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This project, in collaboration with Siemens Energy, aims to provide a fuel cell-powered vessel to Scripps Institution of Oceanography for studying the marine ecosystem along the California coast. Prior to the AiP submission, a risk assessment workshop involving various stakeholders was completed. The design process includes considerations for liquid hydrogen fuel systems, balancing modern research vessel requirements with evolving regulations. Scripps plans to utilize the CCRV to facilitate research and training for scientists, leaders, and policymakers. The project team is currently advancing the vessel design to a functional level and assisting Scripps with soliciting proposals for construction. The focus lies on creating a research vessel that fulfills scientific needs while emphasizing environmental sustainability. By incorporating novel technologies like liquid hydrogen fuel, Glosten and partners aim to demonstrate a vessel that minimizes its impact on the environment.
