An innovative partnership in Western Pennsylvania between Peoples Natural Gas, H Quest, and University of Pittsburgh is pioneering the production and testing of zero-emission hydrogen energy from natural gas. The collaboration aims to create breakthroughs in hydrogen as an economic and environmentally friendly energy source. The project involves converting natural gas into pure hydrogen and a solid carbon byproduct, known as turquoise hydrogen, without emitting CO2. Peoples leads the pilot project by installing H Quest's microwave pyrolysis units to transform natural gas into clean hydrogen and carbon black, used in various industrial products. Blending hydrogen with natural gas allows for assessing its impact on pipeline operations and home appliances. The project includes research on hydrogen's influence on existing natural gas delivery systems and materials testing on pipeline integrity. The ultimate goal is to provide low-cost, safe, and reliable energy similar to natural gas but with reduced emissions. The initiative is supported by regional and national leaders, focusing on decarbonization, technological advancements, and research to make hydrogen energy more affordable and competitive.
