JERA has initiated the supply of hydrogen-generated power solutions to Toho Studios in Tokyo, the largest film studio in Japan and renowned for being the birthplace of Godzilla films. This move signifies Japan's first commercial application of electricity produced from hydrogen-fired zero-emissions thermal power. The project, carried out by JERA's subsidiary, JERA Cross, involved constructing and testing an on-site hydrogen power generation facility at Sodegaura Thermal Power Station in Chiba. The delivery to Toho Studios includes hydrogen tanker trucks, a gas engine hydrogen generator, and hydrogen fuel cell generators to support Toho's carbon-free energy initiative. Collaboratively, Toho Co. and JERA are working on a plan to eliminate all CO2 emissions from the studio's power consumption, with a focus on achieving clean, 24/7 zero-emissions production. The President of Toho Co. emphasized the social responsibility of achieving carbon-free film and video production, while the Global CEO of JERA lauded the project as groundbreaking for decarbonising the entertainment industry. The aim is to provide 24/7 carbon-free energy by integrating renewable energy and digital technology. This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainability and inspiring global audiences through clean energy solutions.
