Keyou, a German company specializing in hydrogen power for heavy-duty trucks, has successfully delivered Germany's first 18-tonne hydrogen-powered truck to logistics company EP-Trans. The converted truck, based on a Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis, features a 7.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine from Deutz that has been adapted to run on hydrogen fuel. This adaptation allows the engine to generate 210 kW (281 hp) of power and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. With a reported thermal efficiency of around 45%, the hydrogen internal combustion engine surpasses the latest diesel engines, reducing CO2 emissions by an impressive 99.7% and qualifying as a zero-emissions vehicle, exempt from road tolls. The truck is equipped with an Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission, which supports various fuel types, enhancing powertrain performance and overall vehicle range. The conversion project was a joint effort between Keyou and Paul Nutzfahrzeuge, demonstrating a successful partnership in advancing hydrogen technology for heavy-duty vehicles. EP-Trans expressed their interest and satisfaction with Keyou's hydrogen technology, highlighting the importance of emission-free solutions without compromising on range or efficiency. The Keyou 18-tonne truck with a hydrogen internal combustion engine aims to contribute to decarbonizing the logistics sector and reducing noise pollution, showcasing the potential for hydrogen to drive sustainability in transportation.
