McDermott to Lead Canada's First Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Facility
Key Ideas
  • McDermott awarded ECI agreement for a groundbreaking hydrogen and ammonia facility in Central Newfoundland.
  • Project includes a 530-turbine wind farm, 3.5 GW of electricity, 150 MW solar PV, and capacity for 165kta of hydrogen production.
  • McDermott to provide FEED, EPC planning, and cost estimates for hydrogen and ammonia processing facilities, driving cost savings and quality assurance.
  • Industry-leading expertise and innovative approach position McDermott as a key player in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure globally.
McDermott has recently secured an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement from Abraxas Power Corporation for the Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) project, Canada's first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. This project, situated in Central Newfoundland, aims to pioneer the production of green hydrogen and ammonia at scale. It involves the development of a massive wind farm comprising 530 turbines with the capability to generate 3.5 gigawatts of electricity, alongside a 150 megawatt solar photo voltaic (PV) system. The facility is designed to produce 165kta of hydrogen and 5000 metric tons per day of ammonia. McDermott's role in the project includes providing front-end engineering design (FEED), engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution planning services, as well as an open book EPC cost estimate for the hydrogen and ammonia processing facilities. The company's Houston office will spearhead the project, with additional support from its office in Gurgaon, India. Through its industry-leading expertise and integrated delivery model, McDermott aims to offer Abraxas a repeatable modular implementation solution that is expected to drive cost savings, reduce risks, and ensure quality assurance. With a focus on sustainability and the energy transition, McDermott's involvement in this groundbreaking project underscores its commitment to advancing the global energy infrastructure in a responsible and innovative manner. The company's track record of over a century in delivering engineering and construction solutions to the energy industry positions it as a key player in driving the shift towards more sustainable energy sources worldwide.
