MissionH24 H24EVO Prototype Advances with Liquid Hydrogen Storage Technology
Key Ideas
  • The MissionH24 H24EVO prototype is transitioning from gaseous to liquid hydrogen storage to enhance performance and increase driving range.
  • The project aims to introduce rules for manufacturers to compete with hydrogen-powered prototypes in motorsport by the end of the decade.
  • The updated H24EVO will store 11 to 14kg of liquid hydrogen at -253 degrees Celcius, offering a driving range of at least 40 minutes with a target weight of 1300 kg.
  • The car's top speed has been increased to 211.3 mph, aligning with the goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions in motor racing.
The MissionH24 H24EVO prototype is undergoing a significant development as it transitions from gaseous to liquid hydrogen storage technology. This shift is part of the MissionH24 project led by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) to serve as a proof of concept for hydrogen-powered motorsport. The aim is to introduce a ruleset that would allow manufacturers to compete with hydrogen prototypes at prestigious events like Le Mans and the FIA WEC by the end of the decade. The H24EVO, which is the third-generation hydrogen prototype from MissionH24, was introduced last year with gaseous hydrogen storage. However, it is now adapting to utilize liquid hydrogen storage, aligning with the FIA's direction for future motorsport applications. This technology change will enable the storage of 11 to 14kg of liquid hydrogen at extremely low temperatures, increasing the car's driving range to at least 40 minutes. Despite maintaining a target weight of 1300 kg, the car's top speed has been enhanced to 211.3 mph, aiming to reach performance levels comparable to GT3 cars. Pierre Fillon, the President of ACO, emphasized the importance of this transition to liquid hydrogen as a step toward achieving zero CO2 emissions in motor racing. The timeline for the H24EVO has also been updated, with the car's design set to be finalized by May 2025, followed by testing and assembly in 2026. The project's progress reflects a positive sentiment towards the integration of hydrogen technology in motorsport for a sustainable and innovative future.
