The Ministry of Defence (MOD) and GeoPura have successfully completed a trial introducing hydrogen power for military bases to support electric vehicle (EV) charging. The initiative aimed to assess the use of green hydrogen in powering generators that charge battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at key MOD locations, such as RAF Leeming and HMS Excellent Portsmouth. This innovative trial marked the first military application of green hydrogen technology. Air Vice-Marshal Rich Pratley, the MOD Senior Responsible Owner for the project, praised the trial for showcasing hydrogen's potential as a crucial facilitator in the transition to zero-emissions energy, especially in addressing the challenges posed by the increasing EV fleet of the MOD. Matt Barney, the Chief Hydrogen Business Officer at GeoPura, highlighted the generators' capability to provide rapid charging for EVs with zero harmful emissions, offering a sustainable solution that overcomes grid limitations. The collaboration between MOD and GeoPura represents a significant advancement towards incorporating eco-friendly practices and green technology within military operations, setting a positive example for sustainable energy adoption in the defense sector.
