Key Ideas
  • The government of Morocco signs a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation with TE H2 for the Chbika renewable hydrogen project.
  • The Chbika project aims to build 1GW of solar and wind capacities for green hydrogen production and the creation of 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
  • The project marks the first phase of a plan to establish a significant renewable hydrogen production hub and contribute to Europe's green energy goals.
  • TotalEnergies and other partners express optimism and commitment to the project, highlighting Morocco's potential for clean energy supply to Europe.
The Kingdom of Morocco has taken a significant step towards renewable energy development with the signing of a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation for the Chbika project, focused on green hydrogen production. The agreement, between the Moroccan government and TE H2, a joint venture involving TotalEnergies, the EREN Group, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and A.P. Møller Capital, will lead to the commencement of pre-FEED studies. Situated near the Atlantic coast in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, the Chbika project's main objective is to establish 1GW of onshore solar and wind capacities to power the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis of desalinated seawater. Additionally, the project aims to transform the hydrogen into 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually for the European market. The collaboration between TE H2, CIP, and A.P. Møller Capital is designed to cover various aspects of the project. TE H2 and CIP will focus on renewable energy production, including solar, wind, green hydrogen, and its derivatives. On the other hand, A.P. Møller Capital will be responsible for developing the port and associated infrastructure for the project. David Corchia, CEO of TE H2, expressed enthusiasm for the project's initiation in Morocco, emphasizing the country's potential to provide affordable and clean energy to Europe while supporting its decarbonized industrial growth. Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, also acknowledged Morocco's renewable resources and geographical advantages for becoming a key partner in Europe's Green Deal objectives. The overall sentiment towards the project is positive, with stakeholders emphasizing the ambitious plans and collaborative efforts with local authorities to make the Chbika project a success.
