NASCAR recently unveiled an EV prototype developed in collaboration with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, as part of the NASCAR IMPACT initiative. The ABB NASCAR Electrification Innovation Partnership will focus on high-performance electric racing, infrastructure development, and energy education. The partnership aims to support NASCAR's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. The EV prototype was revealed at the Chicago Street Course, representing a step towards exploring alternatives to the current internal combustion engine in NASCAR racing. NASCAR is also considering hybrid engines and hydrogen-powered vehicles, with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The EV prototype, tested at various tracks like Charlotte, Martinsville, and Hickory, offers unique features such as paddle shifters, regenerative braking for power generation, and a flax fiber composite body. Former NASCAR Cup driver David Ragan tested the car and shared insights on the adjustments needed for driving an electric vehicle, including the absence of engine noise, sensitive brakes, and the need to rely more on visual cues due to the lack of engine sound. NASCAR's Senior Vice President highlighted the importance of working with OEMs to explore different powertrains and prepare for future racing scenarios. The partnership with ABB, a leader in electrification and automation, aims to drive innovation in NASCAR and support the transition towards sustainable racing practices. NASCAR is committed to experimenting with various technologies, including hybrid engines and hydrogen power, to ensure a sustainable future for motorsports.
