Following the Ministerial Meeting on COP29 Energy Initiatives in Baku, Azerbaijan, the COP29 Presidency revealed three significant energy pledges aimed at driving a sustainable and green energy transition. The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge targets a substantial increase in energy storage capacity and the enhancement of power grids globally to support renewable energy integration and enhance energy accessibility. The Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge focuses on developing renewable energy zones and corridors to connect energy generation with high-demand areas, while prioritizing community empowerment and climate justice. Moreover, the Hydrogen Pledge seeks to scale up green hydrogen production significantly and reduce reliance on hydrogen derived from fossil fuels. Stakeholders from 350.org emphasized the importance of phasing out fossil fuels, promoting community engagement, and ensuring a fair transition towards renewable energy solutions. They highlighted the significance of aligning energy initiatives with sustainability, science, and social equity to create a greener and more just future. The pledges emphasize the critical role of governments in setting bold climate targets, supporting climate finance goals, and committing to sustainable energy practices for a sustainable and equitable global energy landscape.
