King Watercraft, a boatbuilder based in Christchurch, New Zealand, has introduced a groundbreaking rigid inflatable boat (RIB) named H2Ocean, equipped with a hybrid hydrogen electric propulsion system. The versatile RIB is tailored to cater to maritime tourism, security, and leisure sectors, with plans for sea trials commencing in January 2025. The H2Ocean offers multiple configurations, including a passenger transport variant accommodating up to 12 individuals and specialized functions like search and rescue missions and racing chase duties. Housing 18 kg of compressed hydrogen at 350 bar, the RIB supplies the hydrogen to a fuel cell, ensuring continuous charging to a battery bank that powers two electric stern drives. With an aluminium hull, hypalon pontoons, a weight of 3,500 kg, and a range of 150 nautical miles, the H2Ocean promises efficiency and performance. The collaborative effort between King Watercraft and hydrogen power specialist Fabrum signifies a significant leap in eco-conscious marine technology, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
