  • Vessels will operate on green, compressed hydrogen along Norway's longest ferry route, contributing to sustainable marine operations.
  • Collaboration between MAN Cryo, Norwegian Ship Design Company, and other major suppliers highlights the commitment to a cleaner, greener maritime future.
  • Torghatten Nord's move from LNG to hydrogen demonstrates a significant step towards achieving zero-emission ferry transportation.
Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Nord is set to revolutionize maritime transportation with the upcoming deployment of the world's largest hydrogen-powered ferries. The vessels, with a length of 117 meters and the capacity to carry up to 120 cars, will operate on Norway's longest ferry route between Bodø and Lofoten, covering a distance of approximately 166 kilometers. MAN Cryo, a leading specialist in cryogenic equipment, will supply key technology for these groundbreaking ferries, including the design of bunkering systems, hydrogen piping, and vent masts. The Norwegian Ship Design Company is responsible for designing the vessels, which will be built using hulls constructed at Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard and outfitted at Myklebust shipyard in Norway. The vessels are expected to be delivered in 2026 and will mark a significant milestone in sustainable marine operations. Torghatten Nord's operational director expressed satisfaction with the partnership with MAN Cryo, emphasizing the transition from LNG to hydrogen. The CEO of the Norwegian Ship Design Company commended MAN Cryo's forward-thinking approach and expressed excitement about the collaboration. MAN Energy Solutions Sweden's managing director highlighted the company's commitment to developing future-fuel systems, emphasizing the importance of innovation in reducing ecological footprints. The project signifies a crucial move towards achieving zero-emission ferry transportation, aligning with the vision for a cleaner, greener maritime future.
