Revolutionizing Port Operations: Green Hydrogen Shore Power Innovation at the Port of Leith
Key Ideas
  • A Scottish consortium unveiled the world's first green hydrogen shore power project at the Port of Leith, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from vessels during berthing.
  • The innovative project integrates water treatment, waste heat utilization, and hydrogen production to provide clean shore power for large tugboats operated by Targe Towing.
  • Supported by UK Department for Transport funding, the project combines technologies from Forth Ports, Targe Towing, Logan Energy, PlusZero, and Waterwhelm to achieve sustainable maritime operations.
  • The initiative demonstrates a significant step towards the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2042 across Forth Ports' group operations, receiving recognition and a nomination for the Tug Innovation of the Year award.
A landmark achievement was celebrated at the Port of Leith in Scotland as a Scottish consortium unveiled the 'world's first' green hydrogen shore power demonstration project. This innovative project, named the Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator, aims to tackle carbon emissions from vessels when they are docked at the port. The project is a collaborative effort involving Forth Ports, Targe Towing, Logan Energy, PlusZero, and Waterwhelm, showcasing a unique approach to sustainable maritime operations. The core of the project lies in the integration of various technologies. Water treatment technology by Waterwhelm is employed to convert effluent from a nearby wastewater treatment plant into fresh water, which is further used to produce green hydrogen at the port. Logan Energy's electrolyzer technology then splits this re-use water into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen generated serves as a clean fuel for PlusZero Power's Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE)-powered generator, producing green electricity to supply shore power for tugboats. This demonstration is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport and delivered by Innovate UK. The project received significant funding of over £535,000. Stuart Wallace, the CEO of Forth Ports, expressed enthusiasm about this green initiative, highlighting its importance in their carbon reduction commitment. The project has also received accolades, with Targe Towing being nominated for the Tug Innovation of the Year award. The demonstrator project has garnered praise from Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, who sees it as a model for decarbonizing ports and shipping. The success of this project paves the way for similar initiatives to be adopted in ports not only in the UK but also globally, emphasizing the potential of green hydrogen in revolutionizing the maritime industry.
