Schiphol Introduces World's First Hydrogen-Powered GPU for Emission-Free Ground Operations
Key Ideas
  • Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam is pioneering the use of the first hydrogen-powered ground power unit (H2-GPU) to provide emission-free power to stationary aircraft at the gates.
  • The H2-GPU, developed by zepp.solutions and Dynell, offers a more efficient and convenient solution compared to battery-based e-GPUs, as it can be refuelled on-site by a tanker truck.
  • The pilot test at Schiphol will exclusively use green hydrogen produced with renewable energy sources, showcasing a significant step towards accelerating sustainability in aviation operations.
  • The project is a collaborative effort involving KLM, the EU, and other partners under the TULIPS initiative, aiming to transform airport ground operations towards a greener future.
Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has taken a significant step towards sustainable aviation by introducing the world's first hydrogen-powered ground power unit (H2-GPU). Developed by zepp.solutions in collaboration with Dynell, this innovative technology aims to provide emission-free power to stationary aircraft at the gates. While some aircraft are currently powered by battery-based e-GPUs, the new H2-GPU offers a more efficient solution by allowing on-site refuelling with a tanker truck, saving time and increasing operational flexibility. During the pilot test at Schiphol, only green hydrogen produced from renewable sources will be used, reflecting the airport's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The project, co-funded by the EU and involving partners like KLM, is part of the TULIPS initiative led by the Royal Schiphol Group. This collaboration of 29 aviation stakeholders and knowledge institutes aims to accelerate sustainability in airport operations and drive the transition towards greener technologies in the aviation industry.
