Siemens and Boson Energy Collaborate on Waste-to-Hydrogen Technology for Off-Grid EV Charging
Key Ideas
  • Siemens and Boson Energy partner to develop non-recyclable waste-to-hydrogen technology for off-grid electric vehicle charging.
  • Boson Energy's HPAG technology uses plasma to break down waste into gas, converting it into hydrogen while capturing CO2.
  • Siemens will assist Boson in building a scalable solution, digital services, software optimization, standardization, and simulation.
  • Hydrogen-fueled EV charging is seen as a flexible off-grid solution amid concerns about electricity demand strains on the grid.
Siemens AG and Boson Energy have joined forces to work on a non-recyclable waste-to-hydrogen technology project aimed at powering off-grid electric vehicle charging. Boson Energy's Hydrogen by Plasma Assisted Gasification (HPAG) technology utilizes heat from plasma to break down non-recyclable waste into gas, which is then converted into hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide (CO2). The collaborative effort between the two companies is focused on creating a sustainable solution that can support off-grid applications, including fast charging for electric vehicles. Siemens, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will provide support to Boson in developing a scalable and repeatable waste-to-hydrogen solution, offering expertise in digital services, software optimization, standardization, and simulation. The CEOs of Siemens Digital Industries and Siemens Smart Infrastructure emphasize the importance of digitalization and automation in scaling production capacities for complex processes like thermochemical recycling. With Boson Energy aiming to establish 300 plants producing one million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030, Siemens aims to create a scalable and efficient model for waste-to-hydrogen production. The partnership comes at a time when the demand for electric vehicles is increasing, raising concerns about electricity grid strain and emissions offsetting. Hydrogen is highlighted as a potential solution for EV charging, offering a flexible off-grid alternative that requires no upgrades to existing grids. This collaboration showcases a positive outlook on the role of hydrogen in sustainable energy and transportation solutions.
