Singapore's Transition to a Low-Carbon Future with New Hydrogen-Ready Power Generation Unit
Key Ideas
  • Singapore to build a new hydrogen-ready generating unit with a capacity of at least 600 megawatts, set to operate by 2029.
  • The facility, developed by PacificLight Power, will be located on Jurong Island and aims to eventually operate on 100% hydrogen.
  • EMA emphasizes the need for increased generation to meet rising energy demands, driven by sectors like manufacturing, digital economy, and transportation electrification.
  • The move aligns with Singapore's shift towards a low-carbon energy future to address the growing power system peak demand.
Singapore is set to construct a new hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine generating unit that is expected to commence operations in 2029. This initiative is part of the country's strategy to transition towards a low-carbon energy future, as announced by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The new generating unit, with a capacity of at least 600 megawatts, will be developed by PacificLight Power, a Singapore-based electricity retailer. Located on Jurong Island, the facility will have the capability to operate with a minimum of 30% hydrogen from the beginning, with future plans to transition to using 100% hydrogen. The decision to introduce this new generating unit comes as Singapore's energy demands continue to increase, fueled by sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and the electrification of transportation. The EMA forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 3.7% to 5.7% in the city-state's power system peak demand over the next six years, with estimates ranging between 10.1 gigawatts and 11.8 gigawatts by 2030. Following a call for proposals for new generation capacity in June 2024, PacificLight Power was selected from six submissions to develop the hydrogen-ready generating unit, aligning with Singapore's strategic approach to address the escalating energy requirements in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner.
