The U.S. Department of Energy has granted $2.2 billion to two regional clean hydrogen hubs, under President Biden's 'Investing in America' agenda. The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, led by HyVelocity, will receive up to $1.2 billion for leveraging renewable energy and natural gas to produce clean hydrogen. This initiative aims to create 45,000 direct jobs while focusing on electrolysis of water and carbon capture from natural gas. On the other hand, the Midwest Hydrogen Hub, led by the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen, will utilize wind, natural gas, and nuclear energy across multiple states to support decarbonization efforts and create around 12,000 direct jobs. These hubs are integral to the DOE's H2Hubs program, established to promote clean hydrogen production, storage, and usage. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm emphasized the significance of these hubs in strengthening energy security, enhancing economic competitiveness, and addressing climate change challenges. The overall goal is to accelerate the transition to clean hydrogen and reduce carbon emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors, playing a crucial role in achieving national climate targets by 2030. By investing in hydrogen infrastructure and production, the U.S. aims to create a more sustainable and job-rich economy while fostering healthier communities and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
