Vertiv and Ballard Power Systems have formed a strategic technology partnership to provide backup power solutions for data centres and critical infrastructures with a focus on zero Green House Gas (GHG) emission fuel cell solutions. The collaboration aims to deliver scalable options expanding from 200kW to multiple MWs. The integration of Ballard's fuel cell power modules with Vertiv's Liebert EXL S1 UPS system in Ohio demonstrates the technical feasibility and customer benefits of hydrogen-powered fuel cell solutions. This initiative addresses the rising power demand driven by increased data usage and the importance of managing electricity consumption and carbon footprint in the data centre industry to achieve net-zero targets. The Power Module H2 solution, showcased at Vertiv's facility, incorporates Ballard's 200kW fuel cell cabinets, cooling subsystem, power conditioning equipment, and hydrogen storage infrastructure. It also includes Vertiv’s Lithium-Ion batteries, UPS system, and energy management controller, forming part of a 1 MW microgrid solution. The successful demonstration indicates the operation of zero GHG emission backup power within an uninterruptible power architecture. The Power Module H2 offers benefits such as zero GHG emission backup power, rapid power response, extended backup durations, and low maintenance compared to traditional diesel generators, making it suitable for new and retrofit data centre applications. Geographically, the solution targets North America and Europe, aligning with Vertiv's sustainability strategy and contributing to a more sustainable future. Vertiv and Ballard will showcase their fuel cell powered standby power applications at Smarter E Europe 2024, emphasizing the companies’ commitment to renewable energy solutions and sustainable business practices.
