Walmart Canada has introduced the country's first hydrogen fuel cell electric semi truck in Mississauga, Ontario. The Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor marks a significant milestone in Walmart Canada's journey towards a fully alternatively-powered fleet. This move positions Walmart Canada as the first major retailer in Canada and North America to operate a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi truck. The Nikola Tre, as it is named, is expected to have a range of approximately 800 km (497 miles) and operate with zero tailpipe emissions annually, saving up to 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions. The truck operates by storing high-pressure gaseous hydrogen in specialized tanks, converting it to electricity through a fuel cell stack, and producing only water vapor as the byproduct. Walmart Canada's President and CEO, Gonzalo Gebara, expressed pride in this initiative and emphasized the retailer's commitment to embracing new technology for driving industry change. The collaboration between Walmart Canada and Nikola was also praised by Nikola's CEO, Steve Girsky, for its role in supporting sustainability initiatives and driving innovation in the transportation industry.
